What is voodoo about? When entering this site the first thing that comes to mind besides “I’m I going to hell”: Isn’t voodoo evil? Voodoo means communicating with spirits, no spirit can make you do something evil, but you can do evil things using the spirits! Before I can explain what voodoo is understand that the voodoo gods are among the oldest spirits people used to worship in the early ages of civilization. Before the arrival of the Christian God, no nation ever tried to convert other people to their own religion, if you read old historian books you will see that when a nation was conquered the people were killed or put in slavery but they weren’t forced to convert to a new religion, By decree of the black code from Louis 14 king of France all blacks slaves within 8 days of their arrival in the colonies had to be baptized and were forced into Christianity! They were forbidden to practice their old religion and by fear of punishment they stopped teaching kids about their ancestry. Besides at that time when blacks had kids they were taken away from them and sent to different families to prevent them to care for their young ones! For a long time the church ruled the European continent and they tortured all non believers in Christ and many were burned at the stakes! Have you ever heard of the story going around the 14th century that the earth was like the back of a turtle and if you went too far out in the ocean you would fall into the abyss? A group of intellectuals manage to convince a whole continent that this was true, several centuries after Phytagore had already proven that the earth was round and turned around the Sun with other planets. Humanity has been around well over 65 million years according to scientists, and now for the past 2 thousand years a group of people are going around telling you that there is only one god! So all these people that came before us were wrong, because if I recall the Greeks worshipped many gods, so did the Romans, and all the people in our ancestry! To each nation, there are spirits. You may be Christian but you do not deny the fact that there are angels and many of you pray to them! And I could say the same for the Buddhist, the Muslims the Jews and any other religion. You all admit to the existence of spirits beside the one you claim to be your god and many times you turn to these other spirits for help and assistance. Voodoo knows that in heaven just like on earth there is a hierarchy and if you want something done you need to address the proper spirit. Voodoo does not actually worships spirits, we interact with them on a more personal basis, we allow the spirits to possess our body in return the spirit helps us in many different ways in our everyday needs. They can cure our disease give us advice or have you already forgotten that in the bible the spirit overtook many people and spoke in tongues? Weather in séance or other ceremony the Hougan with his knowledge of voodoo can facilitate the coming of your spirit (or the spirit of your ancestors) and allow it to talk to your family and many can be healed while the process is taking place. But in this section we will focus on African voodoo from Haiti. It’s concepts, it’s roots and try to give you an idea of what it’s all about! Vodoun Creation Mythology Damballah created all the waters of the earth. In the form of a serpent, the movement of his 7,000 coils formed hills and valleys on earth and brought forth stars and planets in the heavens. He forged metals from heat and sent forth-lightning bolts to form the sacred rocks and stones. When he shed his skin in the sun, releasing all the waters over the land, the sun shone in the water and created the rainbow. Damballah loved the rainbow's beauty and made her his wife, Aida-Wedo. The revelations of the loa descended upon the first faithful in Ifé, a legendary city located in West Africa. Therefore, everything in life and all spiritual strength comes from Ifé. The homeland of all vodoun devotees, where Ifé is located, is Ginen, from where they were forced to flee in the African Diaspora. In death, the higher soul will return to Ginen to reside with the loa and the ancestral spirits. Because of this, most of vodoun refer to themselves as pitit guinin, sons or daughters of Ginen. |
